Wanting everything, giving nothing
Depending on different parts of the world, tips are anything from essential to being rude. In general terms, we never say no to free money which customers leave us for the service. Obviously every now and then we get less lucky and run into the customer wanting everything, but not giving anything.
What tells do we have on this person:
-
Does not have a lot of money to spend
-
Asking for random things which have no use
It is our job to serve people the things they want to eat or drink. And if they need something extra we hook them up, usually without any extra costs. This is a nice gesture, but often taken advantage of. Does your guest need extra sugar? An extra (slice of) lime perhaps? Maybe some more water?
No problem at all. It keeps us more busy than we were hoping for but it is our job after all.
When you feel like you have done everything they could possibly ask for and your service went above and beyond, not receiving this extra gratitude(in form of money) might hurt a little.
When you are on an fixed salary tips do not matter as much. In the US when working on a tipped wage, not getting tips directly cuts into your salary much harder.
Personal note:
‘Check please’! When delivering the bill you can already sense this tense moment. The guest squints their eyes looking at the amount printed clearly at the bottom.
The best way always is to give a moment for a person to provide payment and they can make up their mind in private. Waiting for a tip makes you look shabby.
You should never ask or beg for more or better tips. You have your self-esteem and if it doesn’t work out for you that time, there is always tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Den The Man
