Eating etiquette

Eating in public might be one of the most common activities which should be followed by etiquette‘s. Usually we learn from a young age, how to behave while eating.

Now what are some basic principles of eating etiquette:

  • Sit straight on your chair
  • Do not chew with your mouth open
  • Do not make munching noises
  • Do not let gasses escape, this includes burping and farting
  • Do not lean on the table with your elbows
  • Taste your food before you use salt and/or pepper
  • At a business dinner taking pictures of the food is not done
  • Ladies first while taking orders and serving
  • Eat at same pace as rest of the table
  • The ‘host’ of the table receives the check for payment as quietly as possible
  • Respect the wishes of the ‘host’ first
  • Food is served from the left side of the guest(except soup)
  • Empty plates are taken from the right side
  • A napkin should be in your lap while eating

Many of these etiquette‘s will already be known by you and implemented at your business.

Personal note:

The principles of eating etiquette are quite simple. Of course having dinner with friends at home or a business lunch in a restaurant are 2 completely different things and require a different approach. You will know best what is proper behavior if you use common sense.

Sincerely,

Den The Man
