Most of us appreciate tips, to some it is even their main income. To other it means nothing and are actually offended by tips because this is their culture. Tips can be improved but it needs some work.

Do not get overly friendly
When your customer feels special they will be more inclined to tip some more. They will be treated the same like everyone else, but small things can make them feel more important. Eye for details; remember and mention their name for example.
“My service is flawless”, that is what every bartender says. This is obviously not true, but the patron does not need to know this. They only have to think you’re doing a little bit extra for them. And this can be so simple; serve them a small portion of peanuts for free and jokingly say: “Don’t tell my boss”. Give them your best fake smile when they try to make a funny comment or joke.
Getting very friendly with your guest might not be the best idea. First of all this might make for awkward moments, secondly; friends feel less inclined to tip friends. Even when you might not feel the same way, having the guest think you are one of their best friends is dangerous in multiple ways.
Personal note:
Spending a little extra time to get yourself some more money makes perfect sense. Keep in mind however you’re working to make money for the business as well. If you focus all your attention on a few guests which tip well, that is understandable. If you get less hours or even fired because you are only thinking about your own pocket and do not care as much about sales that is understandable as well
